Just like all businesses, we’re adapting to the ‘new normal’; from marking out exclusion zones around desks and limiting capacity in meeting rooms to supplying our team with enough hand sanitizer to sink a battleship 😉
But, until last week, we hadn’t faced the challenge of organising a Covid-safe event away from our head office.
Back in March when the pandemic accelerated in the UK and Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered a national lockdown, we had been due to host our annual Staff Development Day. Of course, it was a huge disappointment to have to postpone such a popular event, but we were determined to rearrange it as soon as it was safe to do so.
That opportunity came last week when we finally gathered our UK team for an afternoon of rounders and boules at Bognor Sports Club, a large outdoor venue that afforded us plenty of space in which to socially distance.
After a random draw to determine the two teams, Bohnet Bandits – captained by Managing Director Andrew Bohnet – were just too strong for Donna’s Destroyers – led by Operations Director Donna Smith – winning a marathon match by 26.5 rounders to 23.5.
While we’re only too aware that Covid-19 remains a risk, we were all determined to socialise safely and, just as importantly, show our support for several local businesses that have suffered in recent months.
That included Bognor Sports Club itself, which provided wonderful hospitality all day, as well as local restaurant Mamma Mia that delivered a range of Italian food that was most welcome after several hours of fierce competition on the rounders field.
Throughout the games, fourth base was stocked with hand sanitizer for players to use as they ran for home, all equipment was disinfected between innings and social distancing was in place among the queue of waiting batters.
It might not be life as we once knew it, but we’re pleased we were able to show our support for local businesses at this tough time in the safest possible way!
