Our responsiveness, indirect tax expertise and ability to guide both Vertex and the client helped support the bid process and project delivery

About the client

Our client is a global connectivity infrastructure provider delivering advanced shared network solutions including mobile coverage, private 5G, Wi-Fi, distributed antenna systems and fibre networks across transport systems, venues, enterprises and smart cities.

Operating internationally, the organisation supports connectivity for millions of users and plays a key role in enabling large-scale digital infrastructure projects worldwide.

How did the story begin?

Innovate Tax recently worked alongside Vertex to support the organisation through an indirect tax transformation project spanning the United States and Europe.

The client required a solution capable of managing US Sales Tax determination across multiple state and local jurisdictions within its Workday ERP environment. At the same time, the business needed to respond to new e-invoicing mandates in Europe, with Italy and Finland identified as priority jurisdictions.

From the outset, Innovate Tax supported both Vertex and the client during the early stages of the engagement. As one stakeholder explained:

“Innovate Tax was hugely responsive, quick to engage and willing to find answers.”

By helping coordinate discussions, bring in subject matter experts and guide conversations around requirements, the team helped ensure the right questions were asked early and that the proposed solution aligned with the organisation’s operational needs.

The project

The engagement focused on implementing Vertex O-Series to support US Sales Tax determination for Accounts Receivable transactions. Given the complexity and variation of state and local tax rules across the United States, ensuring accurate calculation and reporting was a critical requirement.

Alongside the US tax engine implementation, the organisation also needed to implement compliant e-invoicing processes in Italy and Finland to align with local digital reporting frameworks.

Innovate Tax supported the design, configuration and integration approach for Vertex O-Series within the Workday environment, while also guiding the client through readiness and implementation activities for e-invoicing.

During the early phases of the project, Innovate Tax helped bring together the relevant expertise required to address technical and regulatory questions. As the project team noted:

“They wheeled in the experts and brought solutions to the table to help smooth out the pre-sales process.”

This collaborative approach helped maintain momentum and provided clarity as the project moved from solution selection into implementation planning.

The results

The e-invoicing component of the project has now been successfully delivered for both Finland and Italy, enabling the client to meet local compliance requirements while integrating digital invoicing processes into its existing systems.

The Vertex tax engine implementation for US Sales Tax is continuing in line with the planned roadmap. System Integration Testing was scheduled for September 2025, with the e-invoicing go-live following in February and the US tax engine phase progressing through its next stages.

Throughout the engagement, Innovate Tax helped highlight potential pitfalls, guide discussions around business processes and ensure that the implementation reflected both technical and operational requirements.

As highlighted by a senior stakeholder at the global client:

“It’s not just an IT deployment — it’s a business process change.”

By helping both the ISV and the client navigate this complexity, Innovate Tax supported the successful delivery of the initial phases of the programme while building confidence in the broader transformation.

Looking to the future

As indirect tax and e-invoicing mandates continue to evolve globally, organisations require scalable tax technology capable of supporting changing compliance requirements across jurisdictions.

The successful delivery of the e-invoicing implementations in Finland and Italy provides a strong foundation for future compliance initiatives, while the ongoing Vertex O-Series implementation will support accurate US Sales Tax determination within the client’s Workday environment.

Testimonial

“The tool itself was good, but the partner experience really helped. Having a team that could guide both the software provider and the business, bring in the right expertise and provide practical advice throughout made a real difference.”
