Meet The Innovator: Kyron Smith

From learning the ropes in the commercial team to becoming a key member of the functional team, Kyron’s five-year journey at Innovate Tax has been one of growth, passion, and problem-solving. Let’s dive into his story and discover what fuels his passion for streamlining tax technology.

Q: Kyron, how did your journey with Innovate Tax start?
A: I joined Innovate Tax over five years ago in the commercial team. Back then, I was learning the ropes of client needs and how we support them, but I quickly realised I had a passion for tax technology and making processes more efficient. That’s when I decided to move into the functional team. It felt like the perfect way to combine what I’d learned with a more hands-on role in delivering solutions.

Q: What does your role as a Functional Consultant look like day-to-day?
A: It’s pretty varied! A lot of my time is spent understanding what clients need – whether it’s solving a specific tax challenge or designing a system to support their long-term goals. I work with tools like Oracle Cloud, Oracle EBS, and Vertex O-Series to create solutions that really fit. And once a project goes live, I stick around as part of the support desk team, so clients know they’ve got someone there to help when things change or need tweaking.

Q:  What’s been a standout moment for you?
A: One of the biggest highlights has to be launching two massive projects in over 35 countries in the same quarter – it was intense but incredibly rewarding. Another was implementing US Sales and Use Tax for a client in just three months, which was a great example of the team pulling together to get results. And speaking at Oracle Ascend in Las Vegas back in 2022 – that was an amazing experience.

Q: What’s your favourite part of the job?
A: For me, it’s about making things simpler for people. Tax can be a complex area, and I love being able to break it down and create solutions that work seamlessly. It’s not just about getting the technology right; it’s about helping clients feel confident and supported.

Q: What’s it like working on the support desk?
A: It’s busy, no doubt! Every day is different—clients come to us with rate changes, regulatory updates, or just questions about how to get more out of their system. The best part is knowing we’re helping them keep things running smoothly, no matter what comes up.

Q: You’ve worked on multiple platforms like Oracle and Vertex—do you have a favourite, and why?
A: I’d say Oracle Cloud is my favourite – it’s where I feel most at home. That said, I’ve also worked extensively with Oracle EBS and Vertex O-Series, and I really enjoy how versatile those platforms are. Each system brings something unique to the table, so being able to adapt and find the best fit for a client is always satisfying.

Q: If you had to sum up what makes Innovate Tax different, what would you say?
A: I think it’s the people and how much we care about what we do. It’s not just about ticking boxes; it’s about understanding our clients and building solutions that really make a difference. We’re all about solving problems and doing it in a way that feels human – not just technical.

Q: What’s next for you?
A: I’m focused on continuing to learn and grow – there’s always something new in this space, whether it’s technology or global tax regulations. I’m also keen to take on more speaking opportunities, like the keynote I did at Oracle Ascend, to share knowledge and connect with more people in the industry.

From speaking to Kyron, he is driven by a simple goal: helping people. Whether that’s making tax technology less overwhelming for clients or sharing a laugh with his colleagues, Kyron brings a personal touch to everything he does.

He’s proof that, at Innovate Tax, it’s not just about what we do – it’s about how we do it, and the people who make it all possible.
