Configuring global tax systems is no easy feat, and Charlie Hards is one of the talented Functional Consultants behind the Innovate Tax name. He plays a key role across both live projects and post go-live support – balancing client communication, technical problem-solving and process improvements with calm precision.
We caught up with Charlie to learn more about his role and how his journey began.
Q: Charlie, how did your journey with Innovate Tax begin?
A: I’ve always been interested in a career in technology, so when I saw the job advert for Innovate Tax pop up, I knew I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity.
Since joining as a trainee, I have progressed from an Associate, a Senior Associate and finally a Functional Consultant. It’s been a huge learning curve, don’t get me wrong, but each stage has taught me something new, both technically and professionally, and it’s been really rewarding to see that development recognised.
Q: As a Functional Consultant, what does your day-to-day look like?
A: No day is ever quite the same! Some days I’m focused on internal projects, other days I’m working on client implementations or supporting live systems. A big part of my role is keeping in close contact with clients, so you’ll see my name pop up a lot in your inbox! I like to make the process as seamless as possible.
A few years ago, I took over a project involving implementing Korea and Indonesia. Since then, I’ve continued to support the same client with additional rollouts to other countries. It’s a great feeling knowing that what we set up continues to deliver value and keeps clients coming back.
Working on the US has also been a big step in my learning journey. The way tax is calculated and configured there is completely different and it’s really pushed me to expand my understanding.
Q: Have you worked on any standout projects that you’re especially proud of?
A: Leading my first project definitely stands out. At first, I was worried about how I’d manage everything, but it went really smoothly. It gave me a huge confidence boost and showed me that I could take full ownership and deliver from start to finish.
Q: Over the years you’ve worked with several platforms, do you have a favourite?
A: I’ve worked primarily Oracle R12 and Oracle Cloud, and I now use Alteryx regularly for both projects and support work. I wouldn’t say I have one clear favourite, they all have their own unique features. I like how straightforward R12 is, but Cloud’s interface makes navigation and searching so intuitive. Alteryx, though, is great for creativity. Starting with a blank canvas and designing workflows from scratch really lets me be innovative.
Q: Tell us a little about what you love to do outside of tax technology
A: I really enjoy working on cars and travelling around the country to attend shows. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people and switch off from the screen for a while. I love the creativity that comes with it, every build is different, and there’s always something new to learn or improve.
Q: Looking ahead, what’s next for you?
A: I want to continue progressing in my role and expanding my technical skills. There’s always something new to learn here – new systems, new projects, new challenges – and I’m excited to see where that takes me next.
Charlie’s journey shows that great skills can come from anywhere. His story is proof that with curiosity, adaptability, and a drive to help others, there’s no limit to how far you can go.
