EU tax authorities increase their focus on data quality

While e-invoicing continues to dominate the indirect tax agenda, another shift is taking place behind the scenes. Across Europe, tax authorities are becoming increasingly data-driven, using richer transactional data and enhanced cooperation between Member States to improve compliance and tackle VAT fraud.

The adoption of the VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) package is accelerating this transformation. Combined with initiatives such as Eurofisc, tax authorities will have greater access to accurate, timely transaction data and more sophisticated analytical tools to identify anomalies, inconsistencies and potential non-compliance.

As reporting becomes increasingly digital, the quality of the data businesses submit will come under greater scrutiny. Small errors that may once have gone unnoticed – such as incorrect VAT registration numbers, inconsistent legal entity names, inaccurate addresses or duplicate customer records – can quickly lead to rejected invoices, reporting discrepancies or unwanted attention from tax authorities.

That’s why master data is becoming one of the most important components of a successful tax strategy.

Whether you’re preparing for e-invoicing, digital reporting or simply strengthening your VAT controls, clean and well-governed master data provides the foundation for accurate tax determination, reliable compliance reporting and efficient finance processes. It also helps reduce manual intervention, minimise costly corrections and improve confidence in the data being shared with tax authorities.

Rather than waiting until a new mandate goes live, organisations should be reviewing the quality of their customer, supplier and VAT registration data today. As tax administrations continue to digitise, good master data won’t simply support compliance, it will become a key differentiator between organisations that can adapt quickly and those that face increasing operational challenges.
